About section 7 courtyard house
section 7 courtyard house
petaling jaya, selangor, malaysia
the original house on this site was one of those early single storey bungalows built around 1963. it was a simple but well constructed (by the shanghainese tradesmen) rectangular box. it had three bedrooms, two bathrooms, an open planned dining and living, and a small kitchen at the rear. it was the age of the automobile and a prominent white flat concrete roofed carporch featured prominently in the front half of the home. floors were laid in-situ with light jade green terrazzo with bare cement rendered floors to the bedrooms. over the years the extensions were made to the small kitchen and a maid’s room was added with a simple lean-to roof
the old house was set to the left of the lot giving ample space to build a whole new modern portion around it. the entire original old house was retained and refurbished. the added-on portion of the maid’s room was demolished for the new annexe. a new living room was added. this links directly to the old living/dining via the new kitchen. a new “plate glass” shaped vanishing-edge lap pool was added off the old carporch. this transformed the carporch into a convenient covered pool patio pavillion. the pool and surrounding deck and lawn area forms the new entertainment area. the extended annexe and new carporch feature wall completely encloses the courtyard. the old and new living rooms and the kitchen have large glazed openings to connect to the courtyard.
